We are grateful for the string of modern home designs we have been trusted to work on over the years and now the modern house on the mountain is taking shape. Surrounded by a stunning backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this modern home takes advantage of the magnificent views and is designed for family living. In addition to the modern aesthetic, the homeowner plans to build a few custom details (not in place yet, but we are excited to share these later.) Some of the other modern homes we designed can be found here, here, here, and here.
Charles recently visited the site on a foggy day as the foundation went in. It was great to see the closed-cell foam vapor barrier installed below the basement slab. This will keep the basement efficient and comfortable once construction is finished.
The framing is well underway and the form of the house is starting to take shape. This home along with the next-door home we designed, has spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The design of the home frames the views while providing distinct spaces for the life these clients want to live in this place. Many of the design elements are centered around spending time together as a family, enjoying their hobbies, and appreciating the surrounding landscape.
The clients have specific uses planned for this detached garage that will enable them to thrive in this space.
Amongst the many activities that will take place in this room, the clients will be able to soak in these beautiful vistas.
Of course, this room feels like you are floating in the trees, can you imagine sitting here and reading as the sun sets?
The vaulted ceilings with exposed beams offer warmth and bounce the light deep into the space.
As the house continues to take shape, we love how it fits on the site and captures the views.
Light, delicate, and open; this modern house brings in warmth and comfort while capturing views across the valley.
Modern architecture is sometimes thought of as being cold due to its use of concrete and minimalization of details. Thus, the desire to create a modern house aesthetic yet warm environment challenged our team to focus on every detail.
Similar to how we approach all of our projects, we worked hard to figure out how our clients wanted to live in this home. Every detail was intentional as we adjusted and moved spaces around to get them “just right” for our clients. The design was influenced by understanding the client’s daily routines, the need to maximize views, and strategic furniture placement. We wanted the house to last a lifetime, so we incorporated aging-in-place strategies and building science knowledge. The details of our team’s carefully planned designs are culminating in a striking home. It has been a privilege to work on this modern architectural project and we are eager to see it finished. Follow along for progress photos of this modern house and see how details make all the difference!
The design process is done and the dirt has started to move. The Muddy Creek Cozy Cottage is now under construction in Rockingham County. It is an exciting time in the life of this new custom home. We have worked hard to make the house functional, right-sized, and cozy. There have been meetings where we talked about working in the kitchen and others thinking about views and topography. Now the fun really starts as the contractor begins putting our sections, plans, and elevations together on site.
The Muddy Creek Cozy Cottage is a place of relaxation and beauty. The details are delicate and will take care to get them just right during construction as they did in design. I am eager to see how the parts and pieces go together and if all the building science concerns I had during design are all that needed my attention. Right now, just the footings are dug, but soon we will have walls, glass, and a roof. Framing will take shape as a modest size home with breathtaking views through large expanses of glass. The firm is simple and the details are minimal making them all the more powerful.
As an architect, I am fortunate to get to dream along with my clients. I get to hear their goals and develop a plan to achieve them. This custom home on this site for these clients is special. With every creation, I invest emotion along with our clients. It is an incredible way to make a living. As I wait for the form to take shape, I am proud of what we have planned and thrilled our clients trusted me with their dream.
