SVBA Home and Garden Show 2014

Wow, what a great weekend. I am worn out and there is still another day of Home Show. I have met hundreds of great people and had many conversations about green design that I lost count. Many people are very interested in finding solutions to make their new homes healthy, energy-efficient, and durable. The most common discussions have revolved around permeability of walls, insulation types, heating cooling and ventilation systems, rainwater harvesting, and connecting to nature.

Many of our fellow exhibitors are the building experts in the valley that I send my clients to so the proximity is excellent. Last night, I was talking to potential clients that want an energy-efficient home, but had never built or used an architect. They had a lot of questions about the process and wanted to talk to past clients. Fortunately, many of those in the construction industry call me for their design needs as they understand the value added of good design. So I pointed across the aisle and said ask him your questions about me. What could be better than having a past client there when I am trying to win over a new client? He spent 30 minutes talking to them about his experience and the value of hiring The Gaines Group – PRICELESS testimony.

Some of my other industry favorites that I have been able to send potential clients to include Excel Heating and Cooling, Trost Custom Builders, Classic Kitchens, Pro-build, Mongers, Sun Power Control, Concrete by Design, May Supply, Eagle Carpet, Design Concrete Builders, Crown Concrete, Ferguson, Farmer’s and Merchants Bank, Hawk Security, AltEnergy, Virginia Cabinet Works, and Weaver’s Flooring.

The Charity Auction

For the fifth consecutive year, Massanutten Technical Center is partnering with the Shenandoah Valley Builders Association on its Annual Home and Garden Show.    This year’s Home and Garden Show will be held at the James Madison University Convocation Center.  Massanutten Technical Center students and teachers will be out at the show all weekend.  Outside on Builders Square, you can find our Building Trades classes and lots of demonstrations of student skills in Welding, Heating and Cooling, Masonry, Carpentry, and Electricity.   Inside the Convocation Center, you will find more MTC students and instructors holding skills demonstrations throughout the weekend.

MTC will auction off a 1972 Ford LTD convertible at the Home and Garden show on April 9, 2011.  This car is in excellent condition.  It has a 429 engine, red interior, and is all original.  This car is a collector’s car.  Only 4234 of the 1972 LTD convertibles were made.  This one was donated to MTC to sell by the original owner who purchased the car in February 1972.  Along with the car comes the original paperwork, key fob, and DMV documentation from Obaugh Ford in Staunton, where the car was purchased. This car looks and runs great!  It has 1972 Virginia License Plates that come with the car.  The LTD can be seen at MTC.

SPCA Great Dog & Cat Election

The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA is coming to the Home & Garden Show in a BIG way!

SPCA volunteers are setting up a satellite adoption center inside the Convo.  To give these adorable animals a break, adoptable dogs and cats will be rotating in out   throughout the Show. There will also be a display of photographs of all the dogs and cats currently up for adoption.

To raise funds for this worthy cause, and just for the fun of it, Show visitors will be invited to vote for their favorite dog and their favorite cat with a donation of $1 per ballot. At the end of the Show, the winning dog and the winning cat will be named Co-Mascots of the 31st Annual Show!
