The Arts and Crafts House

The Arts and Crafts house blends an aesthetic inspired by houses in Richmond and Hampton, Virginia with modern lifestyle considerations.  The home features the classic lines of a craftsman story-and-a-half and is detailed to “instantly age” the exterior while still using durable, low maintenance materials.  The open floor plan has the classic touch of early 20th century planning while incorporating the features desired by today’s families.

Harrisonburg Home Plan

The guest closet and door to the basement stair are convenient to the foyer yet are sequestered such that they disappear from the visitor’s view.  This recess is designed to facilitate easy access to the optional attached garage by substituting a door for the window.  This allows the guest closet to do double duty with the family’s coats.

The home’s family friendly features include a wide stair that leads to an open study loft where kids’ computer use can be monitored.  Depending on the buyer’s preferences, there are options to put the laundry on any of the three levels. The kitchen flows seamlessly into the keeping room allowing for interaction with others during meal preparation and cleanup.  The living room has a classic masonry fireplace with exterior combustion air and rough-in for gas logs.  The full front porch provides a venue for interacting with your neighbors or simply quiet time on the porch swing on summer evenings.  Outdoor living space includes the deck which extends the keeping room to the outdoors.

After a long day, the kids can retire to two comfortably sized, matched bedrooms that recall the classic attic rooms we fondly remember, and Mom and Dad can enjoy the master suite before turning in.  All bedrooms feature windows placed to maximize cross ventilation and generous closets.

Today’s home would not be complete without a full menu of energy-saving features.  These include a high performance insulation package and energy star windows.  The covered front porch keeps the hot summer sun off of south-facing glass.  Low VOC Interior finishes contribute to a healthy indoor environment.
