Get your home ready for the winter

We are always looking for ways to save money, here is a short list of things to do this weekend to get ready for winter and save money.

  1. Check for Leaks – weather-stripping and caulking are a low-cost big payback way to save money. Improperly sealed homes can waste 10%+ of you home heating dollars spent. Check for leaks around doors and windows, electrical outlets, and baseboards. Install child protectors in all unused electrical outlets. Close the damper in your fireplace.
  2. Check your insulation in your attic and basement. Make sure that summer thunderstorm did not blow insulation away from the eaves of your home and that none of the insulation in your basement was damaged or pulled down while you were moving things out for the summer yard sale. Make sure your attic hatch / pull down stair has insulation on top of it. Check for holes to the attic and seal them up.
  3. Check your heating system to make sure it works before you need it. Have a routine maintenance and inspection done by a certified contractor. Replace your air filter. Consider replacing your heating system if it is more than 20 years old. reverse your ceiling fans to blow upward toward the ceiling. Make sure all heating vents are uncovered and not blocked by furniture or other items.
