Triple C Camp in southern Albemarle County, designed by The Gaines Group, PLC architectural firm, has achieved EarthCraft Light Commercial Building Certification. This is the first project in the country outside the state of Georgia to achieve EarthCraft Light Commercial certification. While the Gaines Group has long been known for their leadership in green design, this project is a significant achievement allowing smaller scale commercial projects an affordable certification avenue. The firm is no stranger to firsts in the green movement, they also designed the first LEED certified project in Central Virginia, the 10th LEED for Homes certified project in the country, the first Net-Zero home in Central Virginia, and one of the first six EarthCraft Homes in Virginia. Named the “best green designers” in 2008 by VSBN, The Gaines Group has a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship outreach program where they engage not only clients, but also the community through teaching courses at Blue Ridge Community College, providing pro-bono lectures to community groups and schools, and offering pro-bono green consulting for select non-profits.
Triple C Camp has long been dedicated to teaching kids, adults, corporate groups, and community groups the value of living in harmony with nature. Only the second project outside the state of Georgia to be registered in the EarthCraft Light Commercial green building certification program, the construction of the new Nature Studio now gives a physical center for this effort. The studio, being constructed by T.E.A.L Construction, L.L.C will be an exhibit for green building for all those visiting the camp to see and a functional learning space for those attending camp. Designed by The Gaines Group, PLC, an architectural firm named “best green designers” in 2008, this building incorporates energy efficient building envelope and systems, durable long lasting materials that don’t off gas hazardous chemicals, water conserving fixtures, ecologically sensitive site work, construction waste diversion from the landfill, and resource efficient design and building elements. As camp director “H” says, “we are simply doing it right, to show the kids how it can be done, so they can teach their parents”.

About EarthCraft Light Commercial:
Triple C Camp is tracking certification under the new EarthCraft Light Commercial Pilot Program for small scale commercial buildings in the Southeast. EarthCraft is a regionally-based, third-party verification program developed to foster the greening of residential, multi-family, small-scale commercial buildings, and communities. For commercial buildings 15,000 square feet or less, the new green building program will provide a prescriptive pathway to achieve certification through resource efficiency, environmentally conscious design and construction practices, and building performance testing.
